Is animal abuse getting worse or animal rights activists getting more picky?
This article stems from a you tube video I saw today from a raid 2.5 years ago. The voice over made it sound gruesome and totally necessary but the pictures were a total different story. So I got to wondering. I do remember when I was new to rescue and saw stories about raids I cheered the "good guys" for saving the animals but along with those stories there WERE gruesome pictures of starved animals and feces and just plain disgusting stuff by anyone's standards. Then I thought about MY raid and the condition my animals were in. No I did not have a multi million dollar (hell not even a multi THOUSAND dollar) facility but my animals were vetted, fed, watered, sheltered, protected, loved and did not have the threat of death hanging over their heads. So what has happened in the last 10 years or so? That question led me to my beloved GOOGLE and THAT set my mind to spinning! The vast amount of information about HOW to raid someone or how to spot cruelty is mind blowing and the vast numbers of raids that are going on that only locals to the area of the raid know about would make you sick!
So my next question is the title of this article are we humans abusing animals more or are animal rights activist calling simple things like a dirty water bowl or dirty teeth abuse more often? We all will agree if we see someone beating the living daylights out of an animal THAT IS ABUSE and the person should be called on it but going in a basically well maintained average kennel and finding <GASP> poop? now is that abuse? Some would say it is. Some would say it is ENOUGH proof of abuse to have the animals taken, the owners arrested, and lives both animal and human destroyed.

The vast amount of information I have found is totally overwhelming. So instead of writing up tons of facts I am going to post links. I am going to try to show the progression of how the definition of abuse has changed over the years from unquestionable stuff like starving, maiming, torturing (the stuff the law says) to stuff like dirty teeth, long toenails, and how the reports have gone from REALLY honestly shocking stuff WITH PICTURES of the really honestly shocking stuff to reports and voice overs SAYING shocking stuff and the pictures showing healthy happy animals in average homes/ settings. Or worse yet POOR homes where you just KNOW that the people being raided do not have the money to fight back.
My take on it all? I do not think that people are abusing animals more, I think that big rescues are looking for money and the raids make them BIG bucks. I think that the ones doing the raiding have gotten away with STEALING our animals for their (not the animals) benefit and to fatten their wallets. I think that the ones doing the raiding are BULLIES and money hungry, and I think that there is MORE abuse of animal OWNERS than the animals that are supposedly being abused. But hell who really cares about PEOPLE anymore?
